"I haven’t always been an ice cream maker. My journey started earlier this year, after four years working in biotech consulting. I realized I wanted something more hands-on, more joyful, and more me. I'll be serving up my three core ice cream flavors: Matcha Strawberry, Peachy Lychee Sugar Cookie, and Hong Kong Milk Tea."

Joaquin Soler & David Handschuh
The core idea for Friends & Well Wishers (F&WW) got its start during a nerdy monthly music listening club where co-founders, and high school friends, Joaquin and David jokingly planned to open a bakery called Dough Snatchers, a reference to a lyric from a mid-1990’s song.
Fast forward 10 years, Joaquin and David finally decided to start a line of frozen, ready to bake cookie dough called Dough Snatchers, based on a much loved recipe Joaquin served at his BBQ shop, Smalls. After a successful launch of the first product, F&WW introduced its second brand, Saw-Saw, a line of sauces and marinades with Joaquin's takes on various Asian barbecue traditions.

"With all the information acquired as a longtime journalist and editor creating magazines/covering food and the foodservice industry, I decided to jump into the fray to pursue a longtime passion of baking. It made sense to focus on favorites growing up as second generation Chinese through a modern lens.
I'm sampling sourdough scallion crackers and sourdough chili crisp crackers made with sourdough starter, butter, flour and their respective seasonings. The scallion cracker was inspired by scallion pancakes and the chili crisp by the balance of savory and spicy."

"It all started in 2019 when I became obsessed with tracking my macros. I was eating a lot of protein bars and one day I flipped the label over and realized I didn't understand what half the ingredients were. I went to the store and was surprised to not find a plant based fully organic protein bar with nothing artificial.
I decided to make my own. I thought it would take two weeks. It took me a whole year. To my surprise, friends and family liked it. They asked me for them all the time. I set up an instagram page and was actually getting sales!
Covid happened which made things logistically challenging, and I paused the project. I always loved it though, and in 2024, I decided to bring it back. I took the time to create a real brand, get three flavors, and really understand what it took to bring a product to market. In April of 2025 we officially launched!"

"Sips was born out of my love for coffee and the culture around it. I’ve been a barista for nearly a decade, working in both big corporate chains and small local cafes across the Midwest. Over the years, I saw how coffee connects people, and I wanted to create something that could bring that same experience into people’s homes. That’s how Sips started -- with the idea of taking café-quality flavors and putting our own unique twist on it -- without any added preservatives, dyes, or 'icky' ingredients."

"Mez Foods makes deliciously innovative sweets using mesquite, a naturally sweet, desert-grown superfood. Under the tagline 'The Mesquite Candy Co.,' we craft indulgent, cacao-free treats rooted in flavor and sustainability. Our sweets are plant-based, dairy-free, and caffeine-free, yet still deliver a bold, rich flavor thanks to mesquite’s chocolatey and cinnamon-y profile. We're also a local Chicago company, and we make everything by hand in small batches in our kitchen at The Plant."

"When I was diagnosed with insulin resistance in 2014, a functional medicine specialist wrote me a “food prescription.” I cut refined sugar and ate with a purpose, avoiding empty calories and artifical food. This approach helped me reverse my condition, but every “healthy” snack tasted like punishment or used artificial ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. So I made something better: fruit chews sweetened with honey, powered by functional ingredients, free from artificial flavors, colors and empty calories. When you use real food, things just taste better."
